Braces
Achieve a Confident & Healthy Smile with Braces
The orthodontic team at the Carefree Circle location of All Smiles Dental Group will help you decide on the best appliance for improving your smile and your confidence. Braces are a common option for children and teenagers, while many adults prefer the more flexible Invisalign treatment.
How Do You Know if You Need Braces?
There’s a number of signs that you or your child may need braces or some type of orthodontic treatment. This includes:
- Crowded or overlapped teeth
- Underbite, deep bite, or open bite
- Misaligned teeth
- Finger or thumb sucking habits which continue after six or seven years old
- Difficulty chewing
- Teeth wearing unevenly or excessively
- The lower jaw shifts to one side or the other when biting together
- Spaces between the teeth
Treatment with Braces
The latest braces are designed to move teeth faster with less discomfort to patients. If you or your child requires treatment, you will first have a consultation and meet with our orthodontist, Dr. Lou Taloumis.
Duration: The duration of treatment can vary, but most cases fall in the range of one to three years.
The Specifics: Braces use steady gentle pressure to gradually move teeth into their proper positions. The brackets that are placed on your teeth and the archwire that connects them are the main components. When the archwire is placed into the brackets, it tries to return to its original shape. As it does so, it applies pressure to move your teeth to their new, more ideal positions. Learn more about braces in our orthodontic dictionary.
Day-to-Day: It’s important that while you are undergoing treatment that you listen to your orthodontist’s recommendations. This also means you need to maintain good oral hygiene and keep regular appointments to ensure you finish treatment successfully and on schedule.
Other Common Questions About Braces
Do Braces Hurt?
When you first are fitted with braces, you may feel some tenderness of your teeth for two to three days. Your lips and cheeks may need up to a week to get used to braces. Overall, once patients are used to the appliance, they have no complaints about comfort.
Will Braces Interfere With Playing Sports?
Braces won’t affect your ability to participate in sports, but it is recommended that you wear a mouthguard when participating. Our office carries a number of comfortable mouth guards.
Will Braces Interfere with Playing Musical Instruments?
No. However, there may be an initial period of adjustment.
Should I See My General Dentist While I Have Braces?
Yes. You should continue to see your general dentist every six months for cleanings and dental checkups.
